Jonny Layton

I was born in East London and escaped to Canvey Island aged 3 and had my first Goldmine experience aged 15! Jazz, Funk , Soul and Chris Hill fan ever since!

I started DJ-ing in 1981 when our CB club (!) couldn’t afford a pro-DJ and since then I’ve worked in various venues including the Goldmine, Monico, Kings Club on Canvey and also Shades (with Greg Edwards), Piers (Westcliff Casino) with Dr. Bob Jones and a fair few of the major Essex pubs and clubs including The Old Windmill in Hanningfield, The Sam Lords in Benfleet, Saks in Southend, The Sun Rooms in Southend, Turtle Bay (Churchills) in Southend, and Monty’s in Leigh-on-Sea with long-time DJ partner Mr. Messy.

As well as appearing at the mighty Caister and various quality selected gigs around the South of England, I’m also lucky enough to run “Soul by the Jetty” on Canvey Island – now in our 6th year and voted No.1 UK Soul Club (outside London) for 2013!

I was also the original leader of the locally famous “Canvey Salsa Squad” tribe (having our 30th anniversary reunion at Caister in Sept’ 14) – often seen formation dancing (badly) at the Zero 6 in the early 1980’s!

Radio-wise, I grew up listening to Greg Edwards and Robbie Vincent back in the day and more recently Giles Peterson and others. Since 2009, I’ve got behind the mic and you can catch me live every Saturday 12-2pm with “The Saturday Soulmine” on www.zeroradio.co.uk – spinning brand new soul, funk, jazz, nu-jazz, soulful house, afrobeat, classic soul regrooves and more!
My greatest regret is the loss of my blonde, highlighted soul boy wedge – missing since the mid -1980’s!! ;-)

It’s hard to pick my favourite tunes as I’ve got so many but here’s a few that are always in the box:
